Interior design plan includes working around posts and girders in timberframe kitchen design

MY STORY

by Joi S. Tannert . . . the hand behind the fan...fandeck, that is!

My design skills started as a child…thanks to Crayola, my favorite ‘toy’maker.  The creativity ultimately led to professional training and a BFA degree in interior design and minor in graphic arts from East Carolina University.

My grown-up job and life's vocation is interior design.  In 1980, I opened a full-service interior design business in Raleigh, NC, working with residential clients, builders, and light commercial projects. We expanded it in 1986 with my husband to include custom home design and construction with a focus in solar and timberframe homes. After 30+ years and upon retirement from that business, we relocated to the Grand Strand in 2012.

But I soon felt a need to continue involvement in the design field.  After working as a designer for Ethan Allen, then as an independent designer for a while, I joined Sherwin-Williams as an In-Home Color Consultant.  After 40 years being a designer and working as a color consultant for over two years, I have helped well over 500 customers with their paint choices in their homes or businesses.  And I am also a Realtor, which blends well with my design experience.

In 2018, I decided restrictions of corporate life did not serve my customers best. By becoming independent, I am able to continue helping customers with their paint choices, but if the need arises, I can also assist further with  interior design help, which was not allowed with Sherwin-Williams. Also, I am not limited to a specific brand.  I have worked with many brands over the years in my interior design business.

By blending my background and experiences, now I can still enjoy interacting with customers and keep “playing with colors”, making use of the skills that started in childhood…
